Max Payne

Max Payne is a cop under cover. He's so far under cover that he may as well be a fitted sheet. When his last contact at the police station is gunned down by the mob, his quest for revenge takes a wicked turn for the worse. It's up to you to step into Max's shoes and blast your way through the underbelly of New York's mob and discover the ultimate evil behind all that's happening.

The locations you'll travel through are real-world recreations of the Big Apple. The team at Remedy has done an amazing job of filling in the polygons of New York, too. I haven't seen textures with such lavish detail and color in any game before. From the brick of building exteriors to the detailed interiors, Max Payne is sometimes so realistic it's scary. 

And when you enter bullet time (more on this later), you get to see bullets zing through the air in slow motion, followed by a visible trail and tumbling shell casings. Muzzle flares light up gunfights with strobes of light that'll make your heart pound with excitement, and the sound effects are as solid as the lead you're shooting. All these details add up to make for truly exciting shootouts. Problem is, as you go through the game, you slowly discover some leaks in Max Payne's bucket. But let's wait on that.

Hearkening back to the heyday of Nintendo, this game faithfully reproduces the classic Super Mario Bros. Although Mario Forever's graphics and sound aren't identical to those of the original, they're so close most users familiar with the game won't be able to differentiate.
The basic platformer action hasn't changed either. As the feisty little plumber Mario, you traverse different worlds to collect coins while dodging enemies such as malevolent mushrooms and ill-tempered turtles. You won't find an extensive feature set, but you can at least change the keyboard controls or disable the music and sound effects.
However, we do think Mario Forever consumes a bit too much processor time, especially considering its outdated design. But if you were a fan of the 1980s classic Super Mario Bros., then we doubt this freebie will disappoint you.
